Upstate New York, 1846.ย

The Before is all Florence Hill can think about. The time before sickness and drunkenness overcame her family. Tirelessly working as a maid, Florence vows to bring back the happiness of her past for not only herself but also for her sister.

She finds her well-laid plans disrupted by not only the rampant spread of sickness but by two vastly different men who bring unprecedented change in their wake.

William tempts her with his status, money, and terribly addictive eyes; even if she wanted to she can’t stay away.ย

Jason is struggling, unsure of his abilities as a doctor. He’s annoying and nosey, and despite bringing out the worst in Florence she finds herself drawn to him. Both are devoted to their pasts, clinging to them for dear life, even if that past is the very thing killing them slowly.ย

When heated arguments give way to even more heated passion, will they be able to make it through to the other side free of their chains?ย

Or are their pasts too big to let go of?

England, 1912

Patrick Garrett, a watcher, dreamer, and poet, finds solace in words. His small black notebooks are a map of his life and his guide to the world he struggles to understand. At the Cottage, a large stone lodging in the English countryside, Patrick finds something he hasn’t seen anywhere else in his travels. The residents of this estate have just the thing Patrick has been searching for. They have found themselves. He studies them, sure they hold the secret he is missing. Feeling desperate as time runs past him he misses the truth he needs to realize.ย

Lizzy Colebrook, a maid at the Cottage, falls in love with Patrick, convinced he is her Prince Charming. Patrick has been studying the people around him intently and yet fails to notice Lizzy, the person who truly has what he needs.

Seen through the eyes of Lizzy Colebrook this story is one of self-discovery and love, interspersed with poetry.

The story is most often times not whole. When you can only see your side, a single side, the other can turn malicious. How can you know when something is missing? How can you judge the world fairly when your view is so very narrow?
